South Australian filmed sci-fi I am Mother is garnering international critical acclaim after its streaming release on Netflix earlier this month.

Following its star-studded premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January, the futuristic thriller has attracted positive reviews from Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, The Times UK and more, earning a 92 per cent fresh rating on critic website Rotten Tomatoes.

Mother

Set in a post-apocalyptic future, I Am Mother tells the story of Daughter (Clara Rugaard, Still Star Crossed) and Mother, a technologically advanced robot voiced by Rose Byrne, whose unique bond is threatened by the arrival of a stranger (Oscar winner Hilary Swank, Boys Don’t Cry, Million Dollar Baby).

Shot almost entirely at Adelaide Studios in South Australia, the film’s impressive futuristic bunker was built on the facility’s sound stages and in the Set Construction Workshop, with post-production completed by South Australia’s KOJO Productions, utilising the Adelaide Studios’ in-house grading and mixing theatres.

Mother and Daughter

I Am Mother has been lauded by critics, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it “an uncommonly ambitious feature debut with impressive design work, sharp visual effects, a fabulous A.I. creation and a compelling lead performance”.

It was also praised by The LA Times as “one of the smarter, most assured science fiction films of recent years”, and The Times UK which called it a “stylish and consistently gripping post-apocalyptic thriller”.
