Funded under the Made In NSW program, Screen NSW supported female-led comedy heist drama The Unusual Suspects has been acquired by a range of broadcasters across Northern Europe
The acquiring international networks include NRK in Norway, SVT in Sweden, DR in Denmark, RTL in Belgium and RTS in Switzerland, while Stod 2 in Iceland and Hot in Israel took pay TV and SVoD rights. In addition, Canal+ Poland scored basic TV, pay-TV and SVoD rights, and Acorn TV took SVoD rights in the UK has also picked up the series.
The Unusual Suspects has been sold to Hulu for the US, Bell Media for Canada, streaming service Rialto in New Zealand, OCS in France, Filmin in Spain, AMC Networks International Southern Europe in Spain and Portugal, Streamz and Proximus in Belgium.
This recent deal was secured by the international distributor of the series About Premium Content.
The Unusual Suspects was produced by Angie Fielder & Polly Staniford for Aquarius Films, with Naomi Just as co-producer and Vonne Patiag as associate producer. The series was written by Jessica Redenbach (also series creator) and Roger Monk with Vonne Patiag serving as co-writer. Amanda Duthie served as Executive producer of the series for SBS. The Unusual Suspects is directed by Natalie Bailey and Melvin Montalban marking his television directorial debut alongside Bailey.
Set in Sydney, The Unusual Suspects, stars Miranda Otto, Aina Dumlao, and Michelle Vergara Moore. The drama follows the ensuing police investigation after a $16 million necklace is taken from self-made businesswoman Roxanne Waters’ home. The investigation exposes cracks in Sydney’s eastern suburbs sparkling façade, and the masterminds will see if they can stop themselves from turning on each other.
The Unusual Suspects is an Aquarius Films production commissioned by SBS Australia. Major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Screen NSW and About Premium Content, which also handles international distribution. The series is financed with support from Cutting Edge.
