Australian Netflix series Territory has proven a smash hit, reaching the #2 most streamed English TV show on the platform worldwide in its second week of release. Fans have been praising the series’ “incredible locations” and “breathtaking cinematography”, with the beauty and wide expanses of Australia’s outback taking centre stage throughout.
“The Northern Territory was the perfect location to set the exciting new series with its crocodiles, water buffalo and enormous outback Australian cattle stations. The Top End of Australia is one of the most extraordinary locations on the planet.”
Executive Producers Ben Davies and Rob Gibson
Set on a remote ranch in Australia’s outback, the six-part streaming series tells the story of a struggle for power when an unexpected death leaves the world’s largest cattle station without a clear successor.
Featuring a stellar cast including Anna Torv (The Newsreader, The Last of Us), Michael Dorman (For All Mankind, Patriot),Robert Taylor (Longmire, The Newsreader), and Sam Corlett (Vikings: Valhalla, The Dry), the series filmed across two Australian states, spanning locations ranging from the spring-fed water holes and picturesque landscapes of Darwin and the Northern Territory to carefully curated interiors and heritage homes and buildings across Adelaide and regional South Australia. Production notably received special permission to utilise the iconic UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, from the region’s Traditional Owners.
The series has also received rave reviews from critics, deemed a “constantly watchable drama” by The Hollywood Reporter and “rollicking TV” by The Guardian.
“The South Australian Film Corporation and Screen Territory were incredible partners to work with to mount an ambitiously complex series like Territory. The NT gave us the incredibly diverse and culturally significant and ancient landscapes along with ‘Marianne Station’ and the authentic world of Tipperary Station and its people. SA gave us a base, the production and post facilities alongside matching locations across the Adelaide Plains of Kaurna country and Adelaide environs and diverse architecture allowing us to flesh out the rest of the series and set the interior world of our story.”
Producer Paul Ranford
The largest screen project ever produced in the Northern Territory, where the series filmed on the real-life working cattle station Tipperary Station, the ambitious series was supported by lead agency Screen Territory through their Production Attraction Incentive Program (PAIP), which contributed $1.3 million to the production.
“We’re delighted that we could provide the Production Attraction Incentive Program to secure this exciting and ambitious Netflix production to the Northern Territory.”
Jennie Hughes, Screen Territory
The series was also supported by the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) through its Screen Production Fund and PDV Rebate, with both production and post production taking place in South Australia. The largest Netflix series ever made in the state, Territory used a large segment of South Australian crew, working out of the SAFC’s Adelaide Studios screen production facilities with filming on location making use of the state’s variety of beautiful regional settings and heritage architecture.
“This major new series is the latest exciting example of the fruitful screen production alliance that exists between South Australia and Northern Territory, where the SAFC’s flexible Adelaide Studios production facilities, coupled with South Australia’s world-class crews and PDV providers, provides the perfect base for productions filming at locations across both regions.”
Kate Croser, SAFC
