Australian streaming series Territory has been given an official release date by Netflix, with a planned debut on October 24 of this year.
Set in the remote and unforgiving Australian outback, the six-part series tells the story of a struggle for power when the world’s largest cattle station is left without an apparent heir.
Featuring a stellar cast including Anna Torv (The Newsreader, The Last of Us), Michael Dorman (For All Mankind, Patriot), Robert Taylor (Longmire, The Newsreader), Sam Corlett (Vikings: Valhalla, The Dry), Sara Wiseman (Kingdom of the Planet of Apes, High Country), Dan Wyllie (Love My Way, The Veil) and Clarence Ryan (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Mystery Road Origin), filming took place across two Australian states, with production receiving special permission to utilise the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park from the region’s Traditional Owners.
The largest screen project ever produced in the Northern Territory, where the series filmed on the real-life working cattle station Tipperary Station, the ambitious series was supported by lead agency Screen Territory through their Production Attraction Incentive Program (PAIP), which contributed $1.3 million to the production.
The series was also supported by the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) through its Screen Production Fund and PDV Rebate, with crews utilising the SAFC’s Adelaide Studios facilities and conducting additional filming on location in the state. Post production will also take place in South Australia.
Territory is produced by award winning executive producers Ben Davies (Bondi Rescue), Ian Collie and Rob Gibson (Colin from Accounts), and producer Paul Ranford (Mad Max: Fury Road).
Created by Tim Lee and Ben Davies (Mystery Road) and acclaimed Australian Director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) the series is a joint production between Australian production companies Easy Tiger Production (Colin from Accounts, Jack Irish) and Ronde (Outback Ringer, The First Inventors).
Emerging Territory Aboriginal filmmakers Samantha Laughton (Eastern Arrernte) along with Cian McCue (Larrakia) have both been engaged as Associate Producers on the series.
In the lead up to production, Netflix provided additional funding towards a First Nations ‘Production Ready’ training program to upskill up to ten First Nations screen practitioners for potential crew roles during the filming of this series.
Director of Screen Territory Jennie Hughes said, “The Territory has a vast and unique landscape which really comes to life during productions such as Territory. We’re delighted that we could provide the Production Attraction Incentive Program to secure this exciting and ambitious Netflix production to the Northern Territory. This series is yet another great collaboration with our partners at SAFC and takes advantage of the unique value propositions that both jurisdictions can bring to these productions working across the Northern Territory and South Australia.”
SAFC CEO Kate Croser said that “This major new series is the latest exciting example of the fruitful screen production alliance that exists between South Australia and Northern Territory, where the SAFC’s flexible Adelaide Studios production facilities, coupled with South Australia’s world-class crews and PDV providers, provides the perfect base for productions filming at locations across both regions.”
