Shot entirely in South Australia, Cargo – starring Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit), is now available worldwide on Netflix.
Cargo is the ticking-clock story of a father’s quest to get his infant daughter to safety, set in a post-apocalyptic Australian outback, ravaged by an unknown virus. With only 48 hours to find a foster-carer for his daughter, a glimmer of hope arrives when he meets a young Aboriginal girl who is trying to save her own father. Freeman stars alongside Australian actors David Gulpilil (Ten Canoes, Storm Boy, Charlie’s Country), as well as Anthony Hayes (Animal Kingdom, War Machine, The Light Between Oceans) and Susie Porter (Puberty Blues, Little Fish).
A genre-defying zombie tearjerker, Cargo was written by Yolanda Ramke and directed by Ramke and Ben Howling, based on their Tropfest-finalist short of the same name with 14mill+ views on YouTube. Cargo is produced by Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings of Causeway Films, who established a relationship with the South Australian film industry after coming to the state to produce The Babadook.
Featuring South Australian locations including the northern Flinders Ranges, where the filmmakers found a landscape that evoked a remote world which supported the film’s post-out-break context and the Murray River, where the picturesque location provides the perfect contrasting scenery to the arid outback; Cargo shows Australia in all its rugged glory.
