KOJO, one of Australia’s leading post-production and VFX studios, provided the picture post-production and visual effects for Territory, the breakout global hit series from Netflix. Produced by Easy Tiger and Ronde, and directed by Greg McLean, Territory received additional support from Screen Territory and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC).

This thrilling 6-episode drama has captivated audiences worldwide with its gripping narrative and breathtaking cinematography, showcasing KOJO’s extensive expertise in large-scale production delivery. KOJO delivered a wide range of post-production and VFX services, including workflow planning, editorial, DI colour grading, international delivery, and over 700 visual effects shots. The studio’s Melbourne and Adelaide teams worked in seamless collaboration to bring this epic series to life for a global audience.

Set against the vast Australian outback, Territory was filmed on location across the Northern Territory and South Australia over 16 weeks. KOJO was involved early in the project, helping to plan workflows and VFX support while ensuring smooth data transfer across Australia to the editorial team in Melbourne.

Editors Dave Redman and Sean Lahiff were based at KOJO’s Melbourne studio throughout the editing process, before the project moved to Adelaide for colour grading, VFX, and international delivery.

One of the standout features of Territory is its distinctive visual style. KOJO Colourist Marty Pepper worked closely with Director Greg McLean and Cinematographer Simon Duggan AS ASC to create a stunning and immersive colour palette that complements both the landscape and the performances. “We developed a defined look that showcased the stunning outback landscapes, while respecting the intimate performances of the characters, immersing the audience in the world of Territory,” said Marty.

KOJO’s VFX team, led by VFX Supervisor Paul Nelson, also played a vital role in the series’ world-building, producing intricate, photo-real visual effects that blend seamlessly with the live-action. Over 700 VFX shots were delivered, including hard surface CG, digital matte painting, simulated travel, cattle augmentation, 2D compositing, and extensive clean-up. “The challenge for our team was ensuring the VFX served the story while maintaining the show’s gritty, grounded aesthetic,” said Paul Nelson. “From vast landscapes to intense action sequences, we worked hard to make the VFX invisible and natural, enhancing the immersive experience.”

KOJO worked alongside series producer Paul Ranford, Post-Production Executive Colleen Clarke, and Post-Production Supervisor Elene Pepper throughout the 18-month production and FX schedule to deliver the largest Netflix series ever produced in the Northern Territory and South Australia. The series was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies, with executive producers Ben Davies, Rob Gibson, and Ian Collie.

“KOJO once again exceeded our expectations with their attention to detail, creativity, and commitment to excellence,” said Director Greg McLean. “I’ve collaborated with Marty Pepper many times over the years, and his ‘can do’ attitude and dedication to the craft is at the heart of everything KOJO does.”

Territory is currently streaming globally on Netflix.
