Brisbane native Tim Davies returned home (he currently resides in Los Angeles, CA) to record the score to the Netflix animated series, Maya and the Three.
Tim, who serves both as the show’s composer and conductor, recorded the score at The Simon Leadley Scoring Stage, at Trackdown Studios in May 2021 with an orchestra and choir of Sydney’s finest musicians.
Tim is no stranger to Trackdown, he has worked there on projects such as: Netflix’s The Mitchells vs the Machines and Sony’s soon-to-be-released Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. Tim also composed the score for Netflix’s Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. Some of his most recent orchestrator credits include Free Guy, Snake Eyes, Thunder Force, WandaVision and The Croods: A New Age.
When discussing his time at Trackdown, Tim says, “I have had the pleasure of recording several scores at Trackdown, and I record all over the world, but usually I am conducting and orchestrating for others, so it was really special for me to come home to record my own score.”
He goes on to say, “This score is particularly unique due to the fact that Maya and the Three is set in Mesoamerica. There is not a lot known about Mesoamerican music apart from they used simple drums, logs and flutes. That was my starting point, but being an epic cinematic drama, we also needed a large orchestra to match. I recorded soloists in the United States, a traditional choir and guitar in Mexico and finally the orchestra and choir in Australia. The blend of sounds and cultures is truly unique. “
“Elaine, Craig, Rose, Liam and Ariane at Trackdown were amazing to work with and made me really feel ‘at home’. We had a lot of music to record and we were dealing with the pandemic!”
Some of the artists and bands Trackdown has worked with in more recent years are Tori Amos, The Tea Party, Katie Noonan, Delta Goodrem, The Black-Eyed Peas – just to name a few. Trackdown has also held live showcases for Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and John Mayer.
Trackdown boasts an incredible array of production and edit suites in its beautifully designed space located in the Entertainment Quarter, opposite Fox Studios. They include the ADR (automatic dialog replacement) and Foley Recording Studio, a 5.1 Mix Theatrette, six Pro Tools suites, and 18 dry-hire edit suites.
The official Maya and the Three synopsis reads: In a fantastical world, where magic turns the world and four kingdoms rule the lands, a brave and rebellious warrior princess named Maya is about to celebrate her fifteenth birthday and coronation. But everything changes when the gods of the underworld arrive and announce that Maya’s life is forfeit to the God of War, a price she must pay for her family’s secret past. If Maya refuses, the whole world will suffer the Gods’ vengeance. To save her beloved family, her friends, and her own life, Maya embarks on a thrilling quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy that foretells the coming of three great warriors who will help her defeat the Gods and save humankind. The story brings together a wonderful blend of Aztec, Maya, and Inca mythology, alongside modern-day Caribbean culture.
